Leaning In!

“My name is Robert, Robert Hamilton” I think that is how he said his name. He is standing outside the Texas Roadhouse where my family just had dinner. He is…

A nighttime selfie of two smiling men standing close together outdoors, lit by a warm reddish light — an older man with wavy white hair in a patterned button-up shirt on the left, and a younger man with long dreadlocks in a white t-shirt and backpack strap on the right, with a dark parking lot and a few cars visible in the background.
“My name is Robert, Robert Hamilton”

I think that is how he said his name. He is standing outside the Texas Roadhouse where my family just had dinner. He is out of place, at least from my perspective. A young, black man with dreadlocks, an infectious smile and engaging cadence to his voice, interacting with mostly white folks as they make their way after a hearty meal.

Quickly, he tells me he is seeking donations for his AAU basketball team. He has a friend with him who is shy, but also attempting to stop people as they leave the restaurant. Normally, I smile, nod and say, “no,thank you.” But something is different. I listen as he explains his request and while looking straight into his eyes, I lean in and say, “Is this real?”

“Yes sir!” he replies without hesitation. My questions continue, but with every answer, I find him fascinating. There is a confidence, an honesty, and an unexpected joy that captures me. I make my contribution through his coach’s Venmo account and then we part with a picture and a fist bump. As I turn to leave, his quiet partner, approaches and asks, “Can I have a fist bump too?” We break into smiles and the celebratory fist bump sends me to my waiting family.

So, what of this encounter with Robert Hamilton? Looking back, there was a “leaning in” moment that changed the encounter from a “no way” to a “yes, please.” The “leaning in” moment was when I asked him, “Is this real?” and the “yes, please” realization came when we found joy in our encounter.

This is no earth-shattering lesson of life, but it is an important reminder. Everyone has a story worth sharing. When given the chance to receive it, “lean in,” and listen. Maybe you will find a friend; a friend who inspires you. Make sure to take a picture and celebrate with a fist bump!
